Lucky us! We have the most wonderful friends. We were just waving goodbye to our Australian friends (Adrienne, Simon & Brook) when we bumped into Henk & Liz who we wintered with in Cartagena, Spain. They invited us to sail the Grenadines aboard their beautiful 82 foot Jongert (see the photos). The waters of the Caribbean are, without exaggeration, the colour of a bottle of Bombay Sapphire Gin and as clear as the gin itself. We snorkeled with turtles, stingrays, colourful fish and coral; drank beer in exotic places; strolled along white sandy beaches and ate - pizza mainly. The food is ordinary to say the least, but the Mount Gay Rum makes up for it. Sailing aboard Uisge Beatha (pronounced "Ooska Bay" and meaning "the Water of Life" in Gaelic) has been a highlight. What a beautiful boat. Lenny found it took 30 paces to get from the helm to the galley, though he didn't spend any time at all at the helm and even less time in the galley. He wound down and took a well earned rest after skippering Feijao 3,500 nautical miles over the past month. We didn't really feel we'd arrived in the Caribbean until we cruised the Grenadines. Wish we'd had more time to get down as far as Granada - maybe next year. Just loved Bequia, Union Island and the Tobago Cays, but.... our favourite anchorage was Petit St Vincent which is a small private resort Island with a beautifully protected anchorage that just happened to be right in front of the bar where we celebrated Beejay's birthday - for hours and hours (see the photos). Now we are back in St Lucia. Henk, Liz and Nick left today and are already anchored off Martinique waiting for our arrival tomorrow. Henk is chilling a wee barrel of beer in readiness for the arrival of yet another yacht from Cartagena - Hubert & Ferreda should be arriving in the next couple of days after crossing the Atlantic from the Canaries. We are having our last happy hour at Rodney Bay Marina with rum punch for A$2.50 a glass. Ooooohhhhh Yeeaaahhhh! |
